Fashion Movies

Read a short review about this movie in this week's issue of 8 days. It's showing in cinemas here on August 27. Audrey Tautou plays the legendary Coco Chanel and the movie documents her personal life as well as the rise of her fashion empire from its very start.

I hope THIS movie makes it here as well. Real-life The Devil Wears Prada. Anna Wintour is such a character.

Standing Out From The Crowd

Being an avid you-tuber, I tend to discover/stumble upon musical gems once in awhile. Back in 2008, I stumbled upon this video of a then relatively unknown singer-songwriter doing an extremely hilarious rendition of Opera #2 by Russian singer, Vitas.

I listened to some of the songs on his debut album and remember eagerly introducing his music to my friends. Besides writing his own songs, playing the guitar, having an impressive vocal range, he also has an interesting background story. After getting into a terrible accident where a bus actually rolled over one of his leg, he ended up in the hospital for months and started writing music with a guitar to relieve himself of boredom lying in bed all day. Call it a blessing in disguise, this guy is now a successful indie singer who have a huge following not only in his hometown, Taiwan, but also in many parts of Asia.

Besides his vocal capabilities, he possess what many performing artistes lack - self identity. His distinct personal style including the shirt & shorts combo (which is practically what he only wear on and off stage), black rimmed glasses and bowl haircut, have been adopted by many teenagers and college students alike.

I love the live version of this song. He manages to sing it to a different tune everytime but this is definitely the best version so far. And yes, he is singing about breakfast. And by the way, if you don't already know, this is Crowd Lu.

Fashion Marathon

Brace yourselves for 4 straight hours of fashion drama on the 20th of August! Project Runway US is finally gonna be shown on TV!! woohoo! The fashion marathon starts off with a 2-hour "Project Runway: All Star Challenge" Special, which is essentially a mini-competition among past PR contestants including Daniel Vosovic & Santino Rice (Season 2), Jeffrey Sebelia, Uli Herzner & Mychael Knight (Season 3's Final 3), Chris March & Sweet P (Season 4) and Korto Momolu (Season 5). Following that will be the premiere of Season 6 of Project Runway featuring 16 new aspiring designers hoping to make it to fashion week (which we all know is long over by now). And for the first time ever, there will be a sort of after-show which is a spin-off from Project Runway. This time, the attention is focused on the models who are like the designers, competing to stay as long in the competition to eventually get a fashion spread with the winning designer. Titled "Models of the Runway", we can expect the usual bitchiness among models ala ANTM and behind-the-scenes look at pre-show preparations. Check out the introduction videos of the 16 designers slated to appear in Season 6.

I'm Back!!!

OMG!!! like FINALLY!!! F.I.N.A.L.L.Y!!! I actually feel so god damn happy I'm about to tear I think. I have been so baffled by my blogger account's inability to post anything for the past week now (my create post page randomly one day, turned out different from usual). Frustrated but hopeful that the problem would resolve by itself at first, I eventually succumb to believing that there was something seriously wrong with my computer! But guess what? I was trying my luck to see if I could finally post anything at all, and once again, the same problem persisted. I went to the help page and found out I wasn't the only one facing this problem, which is kinda comforting to know my computer haven't exactly went nuts. Turns out, hundreds of people here in sg have also been encountering the same issue as me. Apparently, it has something to do with singnet, and it isn't the first time this problem has occurred. From the comments left by bloggers, it seems like alot of people have since complained and requested for help from singnet but were met with either nonchalant or unhelpful advice. Thankfully, the google/blogger team have been trying to rectify the problem and many helpful bloggers have also suggested workable methods to fix the problem. For that, I am VERY grateful.

Now that my blog is back to normal, I have so much to blog about!! Will start later tonight!

Givenchy Couture Fall 2009

Jean Paul Gaultier Couture Fall 2009

It's been quite awhile since I did collage layouts, the last being assignments for school. I don't really know what prompted me to do so today (maybe coz I was bored?), but since I was browsing through the Fall 2009 Couture Collections, I ended up doing some fashion layouts for different designers. Stopped at collage No.5 mainly coz I started getting alittle bored. Haha.. Enjoy the spread.

Electrico for NDP

I hardly ever watch TV these days since I catch practically all my shows on the Internet. TV times are usually dinner or snacking times for me or when I have nothing better to do. Today after dinner, I happen to catch part of the music video for the 2009 NDP theme song on Ch8. NDP theme songs are a big thing. Usually, performers are well-known local singers who have achieve some sort of success locally and regionally. Hence, I must say I was quite surprise when I saw the singer or more like the band performing the song. For the first time ever, if I'm not wrong, the theme song is performed by a band!

Yup, it's local band Electrico! Electrico performs the English version (What Do you See) while Kelvin Chen Wei Lian performs the Mandarian version (就在这里) of the theme song this year.

Personally, I think the song sounds pretty good and it's definitely not the typical NDP theme song, but somehow, with the lack of a catchy tune where the young and old can sing along to, I wonder if it's gonna be one of those songs where you forget about by next year? Honestly, what is the last NDP theme song you can sing by heart? For me, the song that I remember the most is Home/家 by Kit Chan.

Since we're on the topic of local theme songs, look what I found?

Brings back memories yeah?

Fashion Muse: Emma Watson

Way before the Twilight craze, it was the Harry Potter phenomenon that captured the world's imagination. Even the now gagalicious and instant girl magnet Mr. RP introduced himself to America in the fourth instalment of the mega successful film series. However, it is Emma Watson, who plays Hermione Granger in the Potter films that has developed into some sort of a fashion icon.

At only 19, Watson has already caught the attention of many influential designers such as Karl Lagerfeld, Chirstopher Bailey and many more and also have fashionistas raving about her impeccable personal style. I thought she looked stunning in the vintage Ossie Clark wrap dress she wore to the London premiere of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince. Even with an umbrella, still stunning!

As a testament to her rising status as fashion's new star, Watson is the face of Burberry's Fall/Winter 2009-2010 Ad Campaign. Looking extremely chic, the campaign shows off her classic good looks with a modern egde. The ad was shot by Mario Testino in Westminster, London.

Resort 2010

So anyway, I wanted to post this yesterday but couldn't get the photos up. While discussing businessy related stuff with my friend yesterday, I decided to randomly browse through the Resort 2010 collections on style.com. I've read quite a few reviews by other bloggers on various Resort collections but these 2 collections below caught my interest mainly because of the colours & prints - two areas that pose an immediate effect on me whenever I browse clothes.

The collection above is from Basso & Brooke. Digital printing is used to achieve the vibrant colours on garments which are kept to a clean silhouette.

The collection below is Christopher Kane's debut Resort Collection. He described the prints as "sinister yet beautiful" and if you look closely, you'll realise why. Consisting of a series of visually shocking prints of nuclear test explosions taken between the 50's to 70's, these prints are used on T-shirt, babydoll and draped dresses. Even the platform wedges are wrapped with the prints to complete the image from head to toe.
